The Next New Thing

I think a "new media" that could become popular is one where you can communicate with a professional sports team that you like. This can be a direct communication to the players or maybe just anyone involved with that sports team that can answer questions. It could be a website that you have to have a profile for and you follow the team you want to get in contact with. It might get crazy for the teams with all the fans they have, but there has to be a system to control it all. The limit might be that you can only follow one team or communicate with one player. The team can post updates of events, scores, ticket sales, playoff standings, anything that could be going on with the team. When the players have a chance, they can post updates about what's going on with them. They can post pictures, videos or anything that they want to share. It makes the relationship between player and fan more personal and special.

P2P file sharing

File sharing is one of the most popular things you could do on your computer and on the internet. This is a process of sharing information from your computer to someone else's computer. An example of files being shared could be pictures, word documents, charts, excel sheets, and videos. They are transferred through the internet by simply just sending it to someone. Another form of file sharing is called P2P file sharing. This also is between different people and their computers where a file is sent from one to another. On TechTerms, P2P file sharing is between two networks that have this program. The website says that it also allows you to search for files on other people's computers who have this network. The article "Content Producers Should Take Advantage of P2P, Not Fear It"  by NMA staff says that people can downloads films through P2P file sharing. This is just one way to use this network. This site also says that this film is released and the people who watch it, take that file and share it with their friends. Along with movies, books can probably be shared. People can send the downloads of their books to other computers. P2P file sharing makes it easy to pass information along on the internet.

Our Class Wiki - so far

For our class wiki, I have been doing a little editing. I plan on doing much more editing and even creating a page of my own about social media. I edited work by other classmates and have added a little more information. I edited a page about education and video chatting in school. I noted how video chatting can give the students a rare experience that they might not have had if new media didn't grow and become popular. I also edited a page on new media and health and fitness. I added information about how people use social media to promote products and sell items for example the body wraps and fit tea. I also said this could help motivate people to get in shape. I want to create a page on how new media has affected our society as a whole. I plan on looking up ways in which new media is being used by all different age groups and what that is doing to them. I also will talk about how new media and the internet has changed the way children are. They are so focused on being on the internet, that they rarely go outside anymore. I will talk about these issues.

Privacy & Confidentiality

Can we actually say new media sites stick to the policy of privacy and confidentiality? A lot of these websites that we can post information on have the option of keeping it private, but people can somehow still access that information. A lot of these websites ask you for personal information that you may not necessarily think is a big deal to put out there, but it could get into the wrong hands. A social media site like Facebook is an example of that. People will post information about their day on Facebook, about what they are doing, where they are, what they might be doing later. This can be a bad thing because you don't know who is looking at your profile and reading what your posting. This could lead to stalking and people trying to find you at these locations. This is a very serious thing. Once you post something online, I believe it will always be there, even if you delete it. Nothing is that private anymore and the internet makes it easier not to be.

Advice to Baruch College

There is a lot of things people can do on these new media sites. They can even benefit a school. If I was hired by Baruch College to use new media to improve the college, I would have many ideas. The article "Open Source Textbook Program Expanding in Coming Months" by Andrea Agardy talks about a textbook that is free and can be updated whenever it needs to. As of right now, students can pay hundreds of dollars for textbooks that are outdated. In order to fix this, there needs to be a whole new book published with updated information, with the open source textbooks, the edits can be done right away. This is happening yet, but it is in the process and hopefully will happen soon. This is taking place because of the new media and the things that we can now do. Another way to use new media is the way I use it in my class. We use a blog to do work and a wiki to do a group project. We can connect to each other through these websites. Teachers can use new media to post homework and school notes. More students will probably enjoy the class more if it's on a new media website. If the teacher is using the "it" thing, students could be more attracted to doing the work. For end of the year projects, the professors can use these new media sites. For example making a page that would attract people to the school or maybe coming up with an idea for a new app for phones. There are so many ways college classrooms can use new media to make it more interesting and up to date with the time.

Creativity and New Media

I recently joined the site World of Kaneva which is a virtual reality. I chose an avatar that resembled mean and I explored the world. I found in my world, in my house I had my own pool and beach.

  I visited a night club where I met other avatars and hung out with them. We were able to chat through these virtual worlds as well.


 

I find it really interesting how you can control another life in the way you want. You are literally living another life where you can be who you want without anyone judging you.

Creativity

New media is an outlet for people who need to express themselves without boundaries. I believe new media makes it really easy for someone to be creative. A lot of the sites we consider new media such as a blog, Facebook, Instagram and others like this, allow you express your ideas, your thoughts online through words, videos or pictures. It is almost a form of art when you use these sites because you are using creativity. YouTube is a site where people posts all kinds of videos. These videos can either be of actual people, or of things that people make up and mix together. An example of this comes from the article "Disney Tolerates a Rap Parody of Its Critters. Buy Why?" by Brooks Barnes. Where people did mash ups of cartoon characters singing and making a music video to the songs. The example talks about the song "Crank That" by Soulja Boy. These people remade this music video with actual characters. This is an example as to how people are using new media to show their creativity. This is the easiest way to express your creativity. Your behind a computer screen just talking about a topic you want and sharing photos and videos.
